The 2023 Writers Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night in simultaneous ceremonies held in New York and Los Angeles.
Among the winners were Everything Everywhere All at Once, for original screenplay; Women Talking, for adapted screenplay; The Bear, for comedy series; Severance, for drama series and for new series; The White Lotus, for limited series; Better Call Saul, for episodic drama; and Hacks, for episodic comedy.
With the win, EEAAO completed a historic sweep of the top prizes at the guild awards, after also winning at the Spirit Awards on Saturday. Upon accepting the night’s biggest award, Daniel Scheinert admitted, “Writing is confusing and hard and we felt so lost so often,” thanking their collaborators for sifting through “very, very rough drafts.” Daniel Kwan used the moment to address the Writers Guild’s upcoming negotiations, saying, “I’m so proud to be a part of the WGA. What you do for the industry, you are a shining beacon,” and added, “This award is for all of you guys, thank you so much for being so inspiring. Let’s go give them hell.”
Mike White also made a rare appearance at the L.A. show to accept for The White Lotus, saying, “I love living a writer’s life, and an award like this can let me keep living a writer’s life.”
Abbott Elementary actress and comedian Janelle James hosted the L.A. ceremony, while comedian and actress Michelle Buteau (The Circle, Welcome to Buteaupia) hosted the New York ceremony.
In her monologue, Buteau urged Steven Spielberg, who was in the audience, to make a movie about “happy Black people”; Spike Lee, also in the audience, said he’d co-direct. She also quipped that Dave Chappelle is the “GOAT” if that means “going off about trans people.”
James also took her own jab at the lack of diversity in Hollywood. “White guys keep telling me, to my face, that we’re taking all the writing jobs, that we’re diversity hires,” she said. “As you can see in this room tonight, they were right. There’s upwards of 10 of us in here.” Buteau also made a joke about her and James being “diversity hires” for the awards show.
The Writers Guild, as usual, also presented honorary awards across both ceremonies. In New York, Lee was recognized with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement by John Turturro, who wasn’t there to present the award in person after being called to set; Paul Simms (What We Do in the Shadows, Atlanta, The Larry Sanders Show, NewsRadio) was presented with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence by Donald Glover; and Penelope Koechl was honored with the Richard B. Jablow Award for Dedicated Service to the Guild by previous honoree and WGAE vice president for film/TV/streaming Lisa Takeuchi Cullen. In Los Angeles, She Said writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz received the Paul Selvin Award; Charlie Kaufman was honored with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement; and creator-showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single) was presented with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement.
Presenting Simms with his honor, Glover joked about his Community co-star Chevy Chase using the N-word. He also praised Simms as the two reflected on their work on Atlanta.
“He never pressed me to do anything with the show,” Glover said of Simms. “He was always there to listen and he made things better just by being around.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet, Simms said, “Atlanta was one of the best shows I ever worked on and a great experience, so it really touched me that [Glover] flew all the way out here from L.A. to present the award.”
In his acceptance speech, Lee thanked his wife, revealing that she gets his scripts first.
“She’s rough but very rarely is she wrong,” he said.
Recalling how he brought tablemates Tony Kushner and Steven Spielberg to his NYU class, “sneak[ing] in” Spielberg, Lee said, “The class went fucking bananas.”
He also spoke about his late mother who would edit his letters home from college, saying, ” I can’t believe my son…can’t write a complete sentence.”
Shortly after that, though, he got distracted by the Knicks-Celtics score saying he needed to check that.
Before he left the stage, he said, “Writing is no joke. This shit ain’t easy. Let’s hope the Knicks win in overtime.”
Host Buteau later quipped, “So glad the Knicks are playing an away game so [Spike] could be here tonight.”
The 2023 Writers Guild Awards were held amid speculation about a potential strike as the guild’s minimum basic agreement is currently set to expire May 1. The guild, which is set to begin negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on March 20, last week shared with members its pattern of demands or broad priorities it hopes to tackle in such talks, with a deadline of Tuesday to submit responses. The issues being considered include standardized fees for movies premiering in theaters and on streaming services and greater regulation of writing performed by artificial intelligence. The guild is also looking to enlarge writer minimums across film, TV and new media; expand protection for writers who work for long periods of time on short-order series; “address the abuses of mini-rooms“; and “ensure appropriate television series writing compensation throughout entire process of pre production, production and post production.” The guild also wants to shore up its pension plan and health fund.
Asked about the upcoming negotiations on the red carpet before the ceremony, WGA East president Michael Winship said he feels “confident.” “I feel like we have a really amazing negotiating committee this year, and a really good group — very skilled, very talented, very experienced,” Winship said. “They are ready to go in and face our people across the table and deal with all the new things that we have to deal with — streaming and other issues — and I’m very confident that we’ll have a successful negotiation.” Of a possible strike, he said: “I can’t make any kind of prediction at this point. You hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”
James also addressed the topic in her monologue in Los Angeles. “There’s a feeling of unity in the air tonight isn’t there? Yes. I’m sure the upcoming negotiations will go smoothly but no matter what happens, we’re all going to support each other right?” she said. “And if we decide to take further action, we’ll do it together, and if we decide to use any of that downtime to come up with movies starring Janelle James, who am I to protest?”
