It’s no secret that UK R&B is in rude health right now. A flurry of artists are re-defining the sound, blending fresh elements together to create a distinctly British take on modern soul music. Aidan is a key part of this – a raw stylist, his individuality lends something different to the blend.

New single ‘We Hug, We Sway’ – his first full release – is remarkably fully formed, with Aidan seeming to explore songwriting from every possible angle. There’s the performance – assured, confident – and the structure, which embraces Millennial tropes while also making substantial breaks in new directions.

Out now, it’s a vivid introduction, a bold piece of songwriting that shoots from the hip. Ben Cole directs the video, which adds a cinematic sheen to Aidan’s work.

Aidan explains…

“Visually, sonically and vocally, this song is referencing feelings of possession, protection and uncontrollable desire. ‘We Hug, We Sway’ as a title refers to the back and forth of a fortified love between two people. The fact that the woman is pregnant, but is seen to be, undeniably, the more powerful one in the video shows the true essence of what it means to be a powerful, human being, a powerful woman.

The whole song is written from the point of view of a man who is deeply in love, but feels like he has to protect his loved one, when in reality, she can protect herself and, in many ways, can protect the relationship more than he can. Both the song and the video are an alternative way of showing the power of femininity, whilst also showing the vulnerability of man.”

A powerful statement of intent, ‘We Hug, We Sway’ is only the start.

Tune in now.
