Taylor Swift met with the family of her fan who died ahead of her first Eras Tour stop in São Paulo on Nov. 17.
Before kicking off her final show in the Brazilian city on Sunday, the Grammy winner took some time to get to know the family of Ana Clara Benevides Machado. They posed for a photo with Swift in matching shirts featuring a photo of Machado. A video shared on social media also showed the family in the VIP section during the concert’s closing night in the South American country.
According to reports, the 23-year-old Swift fan died after going into cardiac arrest, likely due to the country’s heat wave last weekend.
Organizer T4F (Time for Fun) shared a statement in Portuguese, which was translated to English by E News!, sharing that Machado “felt unwell and was promptly attended to” by first responders and was eventually “taken to the medical center at the Nilton Saltos Stadium for first aid protocol.”
The statement continued, “Given the situation, the medical team chose to transfer her to Salgado Filho Hospital, where, after almost an hour of emergency care, she unfortunately died. To the family and friends of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, our sincere condolences.”
The “Anti-Hero” singer posted her own statement on her Instagram Story the night Machado died, sharing that she was “devastated” by the news that a fan had died before the show and that she didn’t have a lot of information at the moment.
“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it,” she continued. “I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”
The day after her final Brazil show, the singer-songwriter announced that her concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour would be available to rent in honor of her birthday on Dec. 13 and features three bonus songs not seen in theaters: “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live.”
