Australian group Surprise Chef have shared new single ‘Rosemary Hemphill’.
The new release is the band at their most cinematic, compiling their rhythmic urgency with an incredible sense of world-building. It’s the latest in a flurry of singles, which builds on the success of 2022 full length ‘Education & Recreation’.
Out now, ‘Rosemary Hemphill’ is minimalist in tone, a true group performance that melds subtle use of vibes and synths with their underlying funk. At times reminiscent of David Axelrod’s pared back arrangements, there’s a louche sense of cool running through Surprise Chef.
The neat melodic phrasing on the keys offsets the jagged beat, with the Melbourne group emphasising an incredible use of restraint.
