Rina Sawayama Calls Out Matty Healy

Rina Sawayama has called out The 1975’s Matty Healy.

The frontman appeared on an Adam Friedland hosted podcast earlier this year, and joined in mockery of rapper Ice Spice for her perceived heritage – erroneously identified as Chinese, Hawaiian and Inuit. Matty Healy mocked her accent, and also claimed to have watched the racially charged pornography series Ghetto Gaggers – referring to a scene that “brutalised” women.

The 1975 singer later walked those remarks back, telling the New Yorker that “it doesn’t matter”. He said: “Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy.’ That doesn’t happen.”

But it seems Rina Sawayama believes this didn’t go nearly far enough. The BRIT nominated pop futurist used the stage at Glastonbury to air her thoughts, introducing her searing track ‘STFU’ by saying she has “had enough” of the situation.

Rina told the crowd: “I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of microaggressions. So, tonight, this song goes out to a white man who watches Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters. I’ve had enough.”

Clash spotted Matty Healy on site yesterday (June 25th) but it’s not known if he was present for Rina Sawayama’s performance.
