Richard Simmons‘ brother Lenny has confirmed that the fitness guru died of natural causes.
In a statement shared with People magazine, a spokesperson for the Simmons family said that Lenny received a call from the Los Angeles Coroner’s office, informing him that Simmons’ death “was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart diseases as a contributing factor.”
The representative also confirmed that the toxicology report “was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed.” Simmons’ family additionally extended their gratitude toward fans for “their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”
The ’80s icon died on July 13 at his home in Los Angeles, a day after his 76th birthday. He was found that morning by his housekeeper, who called 911.
“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother,” Lenny said in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter at the time of Simmons’ death. “I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He truly cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help. So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life.”
TMZ reported that on the night prior to his death, Simmons fell in his bathroom after feeling dizzy and refused to receive medical attention despite his housekeeper’s insistence for him to see a doctor. He reportedly told her he would rather see his doctor on the following day; she complied with his wishes and helped him back to bed.
That night, Simmons shared his final message with fans on Facebook, thanking them for their birthday wishes. “Thank you … I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday,” he wrote.
