In a Monday morning livestream this week, Apple unveiled a number of new products from the AirPods 4 to the iPhone 16. Among those new announcements is the newest smartwatch in the Apple lineup — the Apple Watch Series 10.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro won’t be open for pre-order until this Friday, September 13, but you can go ahead and reserve your Apple Watch Series 10 right now at Amazon and Best Buy. The 42 mm model goes for $399 while the larger 46 mm is listed at $429. The Apple Watch Series 10 will officially release on Friday, September 20.
The new Apple Watch is offered with a variety of band and casing choices. You can choose the jet black case — the Apple Watch’s first polished aluminum finish — with options of a black sports band or ink sports loop. The rose gold aluminum case can be ordered with either the light blush sports band or plum sports loop. A silver aluminum case is available when paired with both the denim sports band and blue cloud sports loop.
Form Factor and Design
The Series 10 will feature the largest display on a Apple Watch in the lineup’s history, coming in slightly larger than that of the Ultra 2 and up to 30% more screen area than the Series 6. This amounts to bigger, easier-to-read font sizes and a whole additional line of text in apps like iMessage and Mail.
Under the front crystal which now reaches down further along the sides of the watch is Apple’s first ever wide-angle OLED display. Watches are often viewed at an angle — catching a glance of the time or seeing an noticing an incoming notification while you’re typing away at a keyboard or resting your hands in your lap. The pixels in the wide-angle OLED are optimized for emitting more light at wider angles. This amounts to a 40% brighter when viewing from an angle.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is thinner than ever before, coming it at just 9.7 mm. That’s roughly 10% thinner than the Series 9 model.
Help Right From Your Wrist
One of the new software features highlighted in the live stream is the addition of the Translate app. Machine learning is used for speech recognition and rapid translation so you can navigate conversation in different countries with ease.
Additionally, a number of new metrics are able to be measured during sleep — many of which designed to help identify sleep apnea — a severely undiagnosed condition. The detection algorithm refers to a dataset of clinical grade sleep apnea tests and then informs the wearer if signs of sleep apnea is detected.
