American pop star Aaron Carter has died.

The 34 year old vocalist was found unresponsive in the pool of his home in Lancaster, California. TMZ reports that emergency services found Aaron Carter deceased in the pool, following a 911 call from a neighbour.

Aaron Carter found huge worldwide fame as a child, with his first hit – a cover of The Jets’ ‘Crush On You’ – coming when he was just nine years old. A self-titled debut album followed, alongside touring commitments across the globe.

Three successful albums followed, with Aaron Carter broadening his sound and interpreting influences from his first love, hip-hop.

Taking a break from music, he returned in 2018 with his solo album ‘LOVE’.

The younger brother of Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, the pair’s relationship was beset by trauma, and social media fall-outs. Aaron Carter alleged life-long abuse from his sibling, while sister Leslie died in 2012.

In spite of his success, the pop star endured financial issues, and filed for protection from bankruptcy in 2013, before clearing his outstanding debts the following year.

More recently, the entertainer was known for a flurry of unexpected projects, ranging from an OnlyFans account labelled “bizarre” by PinkNews, and a high profile boxing match last year.

For British fans, he will be indelibly associated with those early bubblegum hits, and his boy-next-door persona. Fans flooded social media to pay their respects, with Carrie Jordan commenting: “You changed pop culture forever…”

Mo County said: “Being a child star is rough and unfortunately many don’t come out unscathed.” Another commentator online said simply: “Before Justin Bieber, there was Aaron Carter who had all the 90s girls in a chokehold.”

Rest in power.
