London’s O2 Academy Brixton has been ordered to shut for two weeks.
A crush took place outside the venue on December 15th, with thousands gathering for the final night at Asake’s three-night run at O2 Academy Brixton. Two people died during the incident, subsequently named as mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, from Newham in East London, and 23 year old contracted security provider Gabrielle Hutchinson.
The venue voluntarily closed following the incident, with Lambeth Council assembling today – December 22nd – to discuss its future.
The licensing meeting comes ahead of a full investigation, which will feature input from the Met Police, the venue, security, and those on the ground.
The hearing has just emerged from its sitting, and ordered the closure of O2 Academy Brixton for two weeks – it will remain closed until January 16th, when a subsequent hearing will take place to decide its future.
The O2 Academy Brixton must temporarily shut following the crowd crush at the Asake concert last week, Lambeth Council has decided.
