A “lucrative offer” was made…

Morrissey has revealed that The Smiths were offered a “lucrative offer” to reform this year – but Johnny Marr knocked it back.

The Manchester band split in 1987, but have been dogged by speculation about a reformation ever since. Sadly bass player Andy Rourke has since passed, but the rumour mill surrounding a potential Smiths reunion continues to work at a swift pace.

With another legendary Manchester act getting back together this week – step forward Oasis – Morrissey has shared some inside goss.

Using Morrissey Central as a hub, he’s shared a statement which reveals that The Smiths were offered a “lucrative” deal to reform for a global tour this year. Johnny Marr was the hold out – he “ignored” the substantial offer.

Morrissey revealed: “In June 2024 AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour worldwide as ‘The Smiths’ throughout 2025…”

“Morrissey said Yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer.”

The statement goes on to point out: “Morrissey undertakes a largely sold out tour of the USA in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest to New Order.”
