Modest Mouse drummer Jeremiah Green has died.

The band confirmed in a statement on December 25th that the musician was grappling with stage IV cancer. Support flooded in, but sadly it was announced overnight that the much-loved drummer had passed away.

Jeremiah Green helped co-found Modest Mouse, working alongside school friends Isaac Brock and Eric Judy in Washington. Moving from their scratchy, left-field origins, the band would become a key player in American indie’s post-Millennial boom, releasing some hugely influential albums in the process.

Jeremiah Green’s steady yet inventive style under-pinned this. Although he missed out on Modest Mouse’ commercial apex ‘Good News For People Who Love Bad News’ – he took temporary leave from the band – the drummer is a defining figure in their ongoing success and evolution.

The band’s most recent album ‘The Golden Casket’ was released in 2021; Clash spoke to singer Isaac Brock at-length about the making of that LP, a feature you can find in our archive.

News of Jeremiah Green’s passing was confirmed overnight (January 1st). He was 45 years old.

The great Jeremiah Green. My friend, bandmate, and the most creative musician I ever met. pic.twitter.com/38u5Aq0wGB

jeremiah green. what can you even say? the man played a drum set like he’d been locked in a room with it since age 4 without ever hearing rock music, and then was loosed on the world as soon as he met isaac and eric. so inventive, so complementary, so fluid. what a loss.
