In the aftermath of Jon Jones poking fun at Tom Aspinall over his wrestling skills, a UFC icon has fuelled the fire, giving the American a clear path to victory.
While many are writing ‘Bones’ off, an MMA legend has claimed that the veteran still has a trick or two up his sleeve, giving the Englishman something to think about.
Jon Jones mocks Tom Aspinall over wrestling clip with rugby star
On an episode of his show, ‘Fight Lab‘, Tom Aspinall went head-to-head with former rugby star Ugo Monye in a playful wrestling match.
In a huge turn-up for the books, the retired athlete gave the UFC star a run for his money, as he put it all on the line in pursuit of scoring a massive upset.
Monye shot for a takedown, which was successfully defended by Aspinall. But then, in a major shock, the rugby star pushed the combat sports icon to the ground.
Realizing he was in a genuine match-up, Aspinall regained his composure, threw his opponent to the floor, and finished their session on top.

But that footage fuelled Jon Jones to head to social media to post a brutal jibe. He tweeted: “Looks like Tom displaying that amazing UK wrestling.
“My focus is on Stipe [Miocic], he actually wrestled division one. Best heavyweight of all time as of right now. Maybe Tom will go on and beat Stipe’s record one day. Right now, I’m focusing on goat things.”
Ultimately, Aspinall’s wrestling is likely much better than he showed in that clip. Regardless, it will still give Jones something to hold onto. For many, a grappling-heavy approach is potentially his only route to victory against the Brit.
One UFC fan favorite has explained that the polarizing star has to take advantage of his wrestling skills if he ever steps up to the plate to give the fans the fight they all want. With this in mind, Aspinall must be very cautious.
Kenny Florian explains how Jon Jones can beat Tom Aspinall
With Aspinall capable of rendering anyone he lands on unconscious, Kenny Florian has insisted that Jones must evade the younger man’s power punches by wrestling him to the canvas.
During an episode of the Anik and Florian Podcast, he said: “I think he’d sure try. He believes, and I would think many people believe he’s gotta be the better wrestler in there.
“So, at the very least he’s gotta stop Aspinall from taking him down and then as far as the speed and danger of strikes as far as one punch and you’re out, Aspinall has that, I’m not sure Jon Jones does.”
“Jon Jones is a volume-type striker, he is an intelligent guy who likes to mix things up and trick you.”
