Chicago artist McKinley Dixon ushers in the summer with the title track from his forthcoming album, ‘Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?’.
Backed by the might of a choir, breezy horns and Jaylin Brown’s serene hooks, McKinley memorialises the ties to the community that made him. The monochromatic visual – an homage to Carrie Mae Weems’ Kitchen Table sessions – sees the rapper capture portraits of his loved ones, a tender ode to family and generational healing.
Following 2021 debut album, ‘For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her’, McKinley wanted to capture the former’s sense of introspection whilst breaking away from the long-form formula. Of his new album, which takes cues from Toni Morrison’s canon and her steep exploration of the American black experience, McKinley says: “With this one, I thought, ‘What if I tried to keep that intensity and same denseness with shorter, catchier songs?“
Mckinley Dixon will bring his brand of jazz-tinged affirmations to the UK, hitting up The Great Escape in Brighton between May 11-13th, and later performing his album to an intimate crowd at Rough Trade East on June 7th.
