Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, are putting their laid-back spin on spirits with a new organic tequila brand.
Launching today, Pantalones Tequila has debuted online with Blanco ($45), Reposado ($50) and Añejo ($55), available online at the company’s website and at totalwine.com. Per a press release, the “super premium [liquor] is an agave-forward tequila that is smooth, flavorful, and great for sipping, shooting or mixing up in your favorite Fancy Pants cocktail.”
“The world doesn’t need another celebrity tequila, but tequila sure could use a kick in the pants. Pantalones Organic Tequila is the best thing we’ve made with our pants on,” the married co-founders — and parents to three children — say in a joint statement. (Pantalones is the Spanish word for “pants.”)
Made in Jalisco, Mexico with 100 percent organic blue weber agave, the starry spirits line features three blends: honey- and citrus-infused Blanco, a Reposado that’s aged for nine months with notes of fresh oak and sweet fruit, and a 15-month-aged Añejo with flavors of butterscotch, maple and vanilla.
The McConaugheys worked with Tequilera Tap, a certified organic family-owned distillery run by fourth-generation agave farmers Amatitán, Jalisco, known for being the birthplace of tequila. The spirits brand is USDA-certified organic and gluten-free, and it says its zero-waste production efforts include upcycling the agave fibers and remaining liquid for composting.
Pantalones Tequila is also a member of 1% of the Planet, which certifies companies that donate a portion of sales to environmental nonprofits. “We have channeled our energy towards sustainable practices that not only enhance our products, but also contribute to a healthier planet for future generations,” explains the company in a statement.
The Oscar-winning actor first dipped his toes into the spirits world in 2016 when he joined Longbranch Bourbon as creative director; he parted ways with the company in 2022. The new brand follows the New York Times-bestselling author’s newest tome, Just Because, a children’s picture book of life lessons in the form of playful couplets.
