“When people talk to me about Mad Men, they either talk about Don being like their father or that they were Sally,” says Hamm. “Those are the ones I get. ‘I was Sally, and that was my dad.’ And you go, ‘Oh shit.’”

“I had a good time telling Don’s story and the more difficult it was or the heavier it was, the more fun it was in a lot of ways,” says Hamm.

“I remember sitting with my friend, who was just the officiant at my wedding, and I had just auditioned four or five times for Mad Men, and I go, ‘I never say this, but I really, really want this job, and I think I’m perfect for it,’” recalls Hamm. “And he goes, ‘Why not you?’ And I said, ‘You’re right.’ And we talked about just putting it out there, manifesting it or whatever the fuck you want to say.”

“I was raised in such a Midwestern way where it’s, ‘You’re just part of the team, don’t look at me, it’s nothing.’ And then I went into this business where it’s all about establishing yourself and shining a light,” says Hamm. “And I’ve tried, over the course of my career, to have a delicate balance of being understanding of that part of the dance while also understanding that too much of that is off-putting and thirsty.”

“I’m not going to make a movie at that level to get rich. I’m making the movie because I want to make that movie,” Hamm says of remaking Fletch, which he’s eager to make a sequel. “And hopefully it becomes a proof of concept, and you can go, ‘Look, it’s really funny. Wouldn’t the people want to see more of this?’ And hopefully they will. We’re trying to find someone. We have the script.”

“L.A. is home, but we bought a place in New York City. It’s being renovated, and it’ll be ready at the end of the year,” says Hamm. “So, we’re staying in the Village now [while he’s filming an Apple drama]. It does not suck.”

Hamm’s comedy friends were surprised when they first saw him on Mad Men. “They like, ‘What the fuck?’ Sarah Silverman was like, ‘I didn’t know you were a good actor,’” recalls Hamm.

Asked if he was more comfortable with comedy folks, Hamm says: “I don’t know about more comfortable, I’m definitely comfortable. But I’m pretty comfortable in most rooms. Sarah [Silverman] is now my neighbor and she’ll have pool parties or we’ll play cards or it’ll be a fun group. And for me, to be with those funny people, it’s such a pleasure center and it engages my brain in a way that makes me feel relevant and fun and clever.”

“It’s still hard to get a movie made. I mean, I don’t get a movie made. I don’t get a green light or whatever that is anymore,” says Hamm. “But that just means you got to work a little harder and have to be a little more responsible.”

“I witnessed Jon go through what he went through, which is not easy,” says Hamm’s Mad Men co-star John Slattery. “I know there are a million people who would probably trade places with him, but it’s not an easy ride, going from relative normalcy to that sort of rocket to the moon that he was on.”

Hamm on why he’s working so much these days: “I always go back to something that Lorne Michaels said, which was, ‘What are you going to do when you get to the end of your career? You going to look back and go, Oh, I didn’t do that because I was tired?’” No, just rally and get it done.”
