Joanna Sternberg will release new album ‘I’ve Got Me’ on June 30th.
The songwriter has signed to Fat Possum for the release, which follows sessions alongside producer Matt Sweeney in Brooklyn’s Strange Weather Studios last year. The album was built over a frenetic, intensive six day period, which seems to be reflected in the final result.
The title song is online now, and it retains a lullaby-like simplicity, recalling Daniel Johnson in its directness. A plea for self-care, and the requirement to put yourself first, it finds Joanna Sternberg singing: “Why is it so hard to be kind and gentle to myself?”
Later in the song, they add: “Between self-hatred and self-awareness / is a very small thin line…”
Little more than guitar brushstrokes and voice, ‘I’ve Got Me’ is supremely affecting. Joanna comments…
Sternberg says: “I do not remember if I wrote this song before or after reading the poem ‘Oh Yes’ by Charles Bukowski, but the song is definitely meant to reflect the same sentiment. I also have the poem tattooed on my right arm!”
Tune in now.
