Warner Bros. has made several high-profile changes and additions to its release calendar, including announcing that Jason Momoa-starrer Minecraft will hit theaters on April 4, 2025. The studio is making the tentpole in partnership with Legendary Pictures.
Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess is directing the big screen adaptation of the popular video game. The video game hails from Sweden’s Mojang Studios, with Mojang’s Lydia Winters and Vu Bui also producing the film.
Warner Bros. also revealed it is unscheduling its Wizard of Oz animated film Toto. The pic had been set to open on Feb. 2, 2024. Barry Levinson’s The Wise Guys, starring Robert DeNiro, is instead taking that date. Debra Messing and Kathrine Narducci also star in Wise Guys.
Additionally, the studio made tweaks to its 2023 year-end calendar. DC Studios’ highly anticipated Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom — also starring Momoa — will now open on Dec. 20, instead of on Christmas Day. Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren and Nicole Kidman also star in the superhero sequel.
Aquaman 2 is switching places with The Color Purple, which had originally been set for Dec. 25. A likely awards contender, The Color Purple is directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
Fantasia Taylor, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Halle Bailey, H.E.R., Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Ciara, Deon Cole, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Tamela J. Mann and Stephen Hill star in the film.
