In India, we treat menstruation or period awareness as a taboo. We never want to talk about it. Not just that, we expect our girls and women to keep the natural symptoms a secret and hide the use of sanitary napkins. Join us in spreading awareness about the most common woman issue: menstruation or periods. Share this video and subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/2TZqcM0

We salute the makers of the film ‘Period. End of Sentence.’ which attempts to break the stigma around menstruation just like we tried doing so through ‘I Bleed Red’. The film is shot in an Indian village in UP and is aptly titled ‘Period. End of Sentence.’ It recently made a mark by winning an Oscar at the 91 st Academy Awards, 2019 under the Best Documentary (Short Subject) category. The film came into being as a part of The Pad Project, started by students of the Oakwood School in Los Angeles.

We bring to you some extremely basic facts about the most common woman’s issue i.e. ‘menstruation’:

What is Menstruation?

Menstruation is the monthly vaginal bleeding in girls which starts at the age 12 and goes up to 50-55 years of age. Most women don’t realise that menstruation is not a shame. They don’t even know that using sanitary napkins is the most hygienic way of controlling the blood from creating a mess and is recommended by doctors.

We live in a large society but every month women are expected to:
1) Buy the sanitary pads and hide it in a black bag. This shows the dark thoughts and notions of the society.
2) Keep the pad hidden, fold and hide it in files. While the society can smoke and drink openly, we feel shy to even talk about it. The society doesn’t realise that we’ll be empowering our girls by telling them that menstruation is not a weakness or disease.
3) Be prepared to feel ashamed every month, even though there is no shame in periods.
4) Keep quiet when people joke about PMS and mood swings anywhere.

Popular Media and Women Shame Periods Too:
1) In advertisements, the proponents of women empowerment show blue bleeding instead of red.
2) In families, period pain is hidden as acidity.

Challenging the Narrow Mindedness of India as a Nation!
1)There is nothing evil or bad in a woman’s bag. It is the society’s thinking that needs to change.
2) Let’s remove the black blindfold and boldly promote periods and menstruation awareness.

Way Forward:
1) In addition to Beti Padhao and Beti Bachao, let’s add to our daughters’ dignity by repeating that bleeding is not a shame again and again.
2) In 2019, let’s promote a new thought that all men should become like ‘Padman’.

Period is a natural phenomenon. Come on India, let’s pledge to help our girls and women to stop feeling ashamed of this natural phenomena.

Menstruation is natural but women do suffer in our society because of the stigma. Like 1mg.com, the film ‘Period. End of Sentence.’ also attempts to break the taboo around common women issues viz. periods, menstruation, sanitary pads, etc.
