An entrancing reworking…

17 · 07 · 2024

Emma Anderson and Julia Holter combine to re-work ‘Taste The Air’.

The English songwriter helped to spearhead Lush, a seminal group who skirted around the edges of shoegaze and Britpop, while never truly succumbing to either term. Remaining a magnetic force, Emma Anderson linked with Sonic Cathedral for her recent acclaimed solo album.

Album cut ‘Taste The Air’ was an immediate favourite, and it piqued the interest of fellow songwriter Julia Holter. The two started chatting, and this new mix finds Holter offering a deconstructive take on the original, adding fresh moods in the process.

“I love Emma’s voice and the dreamy atmosphere of ‘Taste The Air’,”says Julia, whose own studio album ‘Something in the Room She Moves’ was released earlier this year to huge acclaim. “It was so fun to counterpoint the mesmerising vocal layers with rhythmic elements. I was honoured to fly through the clouds.”

For her part, Emma is thrilled as this alternative take on her artistry. “This mix is more or less a complete deconstruction,” she says. “It hints at the original track, but the parts are replaced by playful piano and stabs of strings and keys. Most notably there is so much space!”

“I was absolutely thrilled when Julia said she would do a mix as I’ve been a fan since her 2015 album ‘Have You In My Wilderness’ and I was lucky enough to see her live the subsequent year at La Route du Rock in Saint-Malo, France when Lush also played. Everyone that’s heard this mix has been completely captivated by it. Hopefully you will be too.”

Tune in now.
