The world premiere of The Aleph Complex opened this week at the Alleyway Theater and put the “wonder” in “wonderful.”
.
The plot, based in magical realism, tells the story of a woman who transforms thoughts into sounds, her mother, who hasn’t left her home in five years, and the last Borders Bookstore employee on the planet. These three characters must connect in order to bring down the walls that encapsulate their lives.
.
Playwright Deborah Yarchun is excited to share her work with audiences in Buffalo, adding, “Plays are really conversations about our times. Theater is such a dimensional medium. For me, it’s one of the most innovative ways of telling stories. And it’s live, in-person, and collective. It’s a live game of make believe, where everyone is playing, and you don’t have to be onstage to play, you can just sit and enjoy it… and you are acting too, even if you don’t realize it. You are laughing, leaning forward, and responding when a play is really ticking. Everybody is in a bigger conversation about the work onstage as it is unfolding. Which is different from a movie because is a story that is playing live, and it’s different every night… I think the audience is one of the most important roles.”
.
The Aleph Complex is onstage at The Alleyway from February 10 through March 4, 2023.
