Geordie Greep confirms the news…

11 · 08 · 2024

London avant rock group black midi have split up.

The band emerged from the creative nexus that surrounds South London venue the Brixton Windmill, blending math rock dexterity with jazz, skronk, and sundry other noises. An uncompromising live experience, black midi blended stunning chops – drummer Morgan Simpson is lauded as a generational talent – with some outstanding ideas.

Three albums on Rough Trade Records followed, but it now seems that black midi have broken up.

The band’s Geordie Greep is hosting a series of solo events at North London community space MAP Studios, and appeared to confirm the news in the chat section of a live-stream.

black midi’s Cameron Picton then confirmed the news, saying he was “blindsided” by the unexpected announce.

He writes: “We’d agreed not to say anything about ‘breaking up’ so I was as blindsided as everyone else last night but maybe in a different way. I guess sometimes all you can say is lol Anyway! Starting sessions for my own record soon, looking forward – should be good, hopefully great!”

Fans were disappointed, but took the news in their stride – the memes have been outrageous…

And this post sums it all up:

not really upset about black midi cause they’re all insanely talented musicians and i know for a fact that the stuff they make on their own/with others is just as great as bm, if anything i’m rlly excited they’ll be branching off into different directions
