Berthold Tours (1838-97) was a Dutch-born violinist and organist who moved to Britain in 1861 and from 1877 worked as chief musical editor to the publisher Novello. Tours received his early musical training in Rotterdam and Brussels, and something of his regional heritage pervades the attractive trio section of this lively gavotte. I believe this piece – from 1873 – was originally written for organ, but have also seen it referred to as a piano piece. Tours also wrote some salon pieces for piano.
