In a switch-up on its previous position of opposition, Apple supported California’s Right to Repair Act back in August. Now the White House has pre-announced that Apple is ready to unveil it’s going to “make parts, tools, and documentation” available for both independent repair businesses and consumers nationwide. Here’s what we know so far.
Reported by Reuters/Yahoo Finance, Lael Brainard, the National Economic Council Director announced today that Apple would be making the new nationwide right to repair commitment soon.
Apple’s announcement will be part of an event later today, October 24, that President Biden is holding to “promote competition and crack down on so-called junk fees and other actions that jack up prices for consumers.”
Brainard shared that following Apple’s support of California’s Right to Repair Act, this next-level initiative from the iPhone maker will bring equity for consumers and small businesses across the country.
“That means that whether you are in California, Maine or Michigan, Apple will make the parts, tools, and documentation needed to repair your Apple products available to you at reasonable prices, as outlined in the California law,” she said.
Brainard is also set to ask Congress to pass a right to repair law. Stay tuned as we’ll learn more soon.
Notably, Apple previously launched its Self Service Repair in the US (for anyone to use) in fall 2021 with more countries following in late 2022.
