“A ballad for the romantically brave…”

17 · 09 · 2024

London group Memory Of Speke have shared their debut single ‘Wife Once’.

The band’s witty, theatrical performances have gathered a cult following in London, blending alt-pop melodies, comedy, and plenty of breaking-the-fourth-wall manoeuvres.

Out now, debut single ‘Wife Once’ pins down their impish charms in one place – you can hear aspects of Kate Bush world-building in there, alongside a kind of Let’s Eat Grandma yearning for originality.

A fusion of different styles, influences, and genres, ‘Wife Once’ carries a daring sense of information saturation, but it also doubles as a slick alt-pop song.

The band comment…

We liked the idea of an anonymous caller to a hotline who seems to have been through it all before, guiding the listener further and further away from an abusive relationship. As the narrator’s passion for the tale intensifies, the music evolves as well, refusing to return to its soft, meek past. A final climactic shriek reiterates the statement, “Don’t go back there”—a ballad for the romantically brave.

Catch Memory Of Speke at London’s The Old Blue Last on September 27th. Check out ‘Wife Once’ below.
