What does Stephen Colbert do when he’s not hosting The Late Show? He cooks with his wife Evie, according to the duo’s forthcoming book, Does This Taste Funny?
The Colberts’ cookbook isn’t officially out until Sept. 17, but preorders are already flying off the (metaphorical) shelves: The book soaring to the No. 1 spot on Amazon’s best-sellers list, passing books like Rebecca Yarros’ Onyx Storm and Colleen Hoover’s It Starts With Us. If you’re looking for some culinary inspiration, preorder Does This Taste Funny? now on Target, Walmart, or Amazon in a Kindle or hardcover edition.
According to the Colberts, the idea for a cookbook began simmering during the Covid lockdown. “We were all stuck together and couldn’t go out, so we cooked,” they say. “We had all three kids back under one roof for the first time in a long time, and we had dinner each night as a family. Cooking together became a major source of entertainment.”
Does This Taste Funny? showcases favorite recipes from Stephen, Evie, and their friends, spanning from meat to cocktails to “Party Food” (“called ‘party food’ because ‘appetizers’ implies something to follow when we all know that, often, this is the only course,” per the book’s description). Dessert recipes make up the biggest section of the book, because, according to Evie, they’re a great way to “postpone clearing up.” Besides the recipes, readers also get playful commentary from Stephen and Evie.
Early reviews of the cookbook are positive, with — no surprise — some celebrity endorsements to boot. “This joyful cookbook filled with delicious Southern family recipes and gorgeous photographs is also the story of two wonderful people who deeply love and admire each other. You’ll love this book!” says cookbook legend Ina Garten.
