Mattel’s been trying off and on for years to get a He-Man movie off the ground, with Amazon MGM pitching in to help back in May. Months Nicolas Galitzine lande the titular role, Riverdale star Camila Mendes has been added to play one of his key allies.

Per Deadline, the Riverdale alum will play Teela, a captain of the royal guard and close friend of He-Man’s alter-ego, Prince Adam. (And depending on the show, she eventually becomes his love interest.) In the 1987 film, she was played by Chelsea film, and has been voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Melissa Benoist, and Kimberly Brooks in the more recent animated shows. The Hollywood Reporter notes Mendes’ casting is fairly recent, and she won the role against Black Adam’s Quintessa Swindell, Barbie’s Alexandra Shipp, and Clara Rugaard (Black Mirror). It’s been a busy 2024 for Mendes: she’s starred in three movies (and executive produced two of them), and also recently landed a lead role in Sony’s upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Details on the upcoming film—titled Masters of the Universe, just like the ’87 movie—are currently in the dark. But the film is said to maintain the general concept of the series, wherein Adam of Eternia uses the Power Sword to shapeshift into the heroic hunk and fight Skeletor and his armies of evil. Travis Knight, best known for Bumblebee and Laika’s Kubo & the Two Strings, will direct the picture.

Masters of the Universe will release in theaters on June 5, 2026.
