Henry Cavill was committed to his cameo in Marvel‘s Deadpool & Wolverine, so much so that he even got sick after smoking cigars for the role, according to director Shawn Levy.

The filmmaker recently chatted with The New York Times, where he revealed that the Man of Steel star was “sick to his stomach” after inhaling cigar smoke for “eight hours straight” while filming his brief appearance as the Cavillrine, a Wolverine variant.

“Not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day,” Levy recalled. “I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver.”

In the scene, Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool comes across the Cavillrine as he travels through the multiverse in search of other versions of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine who will team up with them. While most of the variants were also played by Jackman, Cavill’s was the one exception.

“Can I please point out that Ryan brilliantly named Henry Cavill’s Logan ‘the Cavillrine’?” Levy added.

The director also noted that Cavill’s casting served as an opportunity to reference the shocking announcement in 2022, when it was revealed that the actor wouldn’t be returning as Superman in the new DC universe under bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“In the case of Henry, it was not long after everything went down with DC and word came that Henry was being replaced as Superman,” Levy explained. “Given that Deadpool is in constant conversation with culture, it felt like a great opportunity to first of all cast Henry Cavill in a part that he would kick ass at, but also to poke fun at that other comic-book-founded movie studio and play with some self-awareness there.”

Last year, it was announced that David Corenswet would be portraying the legendary superhero in the upcoming Superman, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Cavill was among many surprise guest appearances throughout Deadpool & Wolverine, including Chris Evans’ return as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Wesley Snipes as Blade. Channing Tatum also stars as Gambit, with Blake Lively as Lady Deadpool.
