The South Florida pioneer returns with a sequel to his breakthrough project
19 · 07 · 2024
South Florida underground rap pioneer Denzel Curry returns with ‘King Of The Mysterious South Vol. 2’ a sequel to the 2012 mixtape that cemented his breakthrough sound, catching the attention Earl Sweatshirt, who gave him his first big co-sign a year before he would blow up with ‘Threatz’.
While it intends to return sonically to an earlier sound, it does so with a fresh perspective – one that could only be gleaned through Curry’s decade plus creative journey, in which each new record has aimed to innovate. The original project was performed from the viewpoint of Raven Miyagi, a persona given to Curry by Raider Klan founder SpaceGhostPurrp, this time around we’re witnessing the levelled-up Big Ultra – who isn’t afraid to bask in the glory of a decade plus career.
‘King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2’ is a record that Curry has been attempting to create for some time, each attempt eventually mutating into another project along the way; including 2016’s ‘Imperial’ and 2020’s ’13LOOD 1N + 13LOOD OUT’, however, as is often the case, when he stopped trying, the material began to emerge.
The resulting project is a dense meditation on the musical heritage of the South, with its cross-generational contributors hailing from Memphis and Houston to South Florida – as well as acts like A$AP Rocky and Ferg, who have been heavily influenced by Southern rap and represent the sound of the era in which the first volume surfaced.
Denzel Curry will be playing a few UK festivals next month, including Korn Presents at Gunnersbury Park (11th August) and Reading and Leeds Festival (21st and 22nd August respectively).
