The fact that you can go to a Disney-affiliated streaming site and access one of the most brutally terrifying movies in recent memory is kind of incredible. You can understand why Disney made sure parental controls were fully operational before Disney+ merged with Hulu—but for age-appropriate audiences, When Evil Lurks is nerve-jangling horror at its absolute best. Nicolas Cage goes on a gorgeously weird and surreal revenge rampage in Panos Cosmatos’ 2018 cult sensation, which co-stars Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, and the breakout macaroni mascot known as the Cheddar Goblin. Stream on Hulu.

This 2021 Irish folk-horror movie follows a misfit high-schooler who starts to suspect her troubled mother might have been replaced by a changeling—and soon pieces together that it’s not her family’s first encounter with a mystical malevolence. Stream on Hulu.

Another tale of mothers and daughters, this eerie 2023 release is about a nurse grieving the sudden loss of her child—who then decides to team up with an oddball pathologist after discovering she’s hiding Frankenstein-style experiments in her apartment. Stream on Hulu.

Over a decade before they teamed up for George & Tammy, Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain played a young married couple grappling with some very different sorts of trouble in this 2011 indie, in which a man becomes convinced his apocalyptic visions are signaling an impending disaster. M. Night Shyamalan executive produced this series—he also directed the pilot— based on the Wayward Pines novels by Blake Crouch (Dark Matter). It ran for two seasons for a total of 20 episodes, and follows a federal agent (Matt Dillon) on a missing-person search who stumbles into a very strange small town after a car accident. A very strange small town… with a big secret. Stream on Hulu.

Season one of The Exorcist—which contains a surprising link to the original Exorcist movie—was great; season two started a new story that ended up being just as great. It only ran from 2016-2017 and left us with just 20 episodes, but fans of horror TV will always remember this well-written, well-acted, and scary show with fond nightmares. Stream on Hulu.
