Track Of The Day 30/9 – Precious Pepala

Precious Pepala first heard music in church, a space for community, and personal communion.

That aspect has certainly stuck with her, and despite the secular nature of her own songwriting, there is definitely a flavour of worship, the experience of devotion, in her creativity.

The Sheffield vocalist dived into R&B from an early age, using Spotify to uncover the generation just behind her. Infatuated by Aaliyah, Brandy, and Destiny’s Child, she blends these late 90s tropes with a different viewpoint to perfect her own style.

New single ‘Looking For Trouble’ is an emphatic offering – so smooth and controlled on the surface, the lyrics actually deal with rape culture, and the way that the objectification of women leads directly to physical violence.

Beautifully accomplished, Precious’ tender vocal seems to amplify the intensity of the song, with each note uttered with pure intent. She comments…

“‘Looking for Trouble’ is a song about rape culture and victim blaming. It addresses the unfortunately relatable feeling of fear when walking alone at night as a female. The lyrics also address the way that victims of sexual abuse are all too commonly questioned about things such as their clothing, actions or level of intoxication as if to justify predatory behaviour.”

“I feel very passionately about discussing this subject matter through my music and I hope this song acts as a conversation starter, because these issues need to be discussed until we see change.”
