Prime Video’s next adult animated series is going to the devil.
The Amazon-owned streamer has ordered two seasons of Hazbin Hotel, a series based on a 2019 animated pilot of the same name by Vivienne Medrano. A24 is producing the series, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment handling the animation. The first season is set to premiere in January.
Hazbin Hotel centers on Charlie, the princess of Hell, and her mission of rehabilitating demons as a means of peacefully reducing overpopulation in the realm. She opens a hotel with the hope that her guests will check out and move into Heaven. Most of Hell is skeptical to say the least, but her devoted partner, Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film star Angel Dust, stand by her. A powerful entity called the Radio Demon reaches out to assist Charlie, giving her crazy dream a chance to become a reality.
Medrano, also known as Vivziepop on her widely viewed YouTube channel, financed the Hazbin Hotel pilot through Patreon. It debuted YouTube in October 2019. A24 made a series commitment in August 2020, but the show did not find a home until Prime Video came aboard.
The series will join an adult animation slate at Prime Video that also includes Invincible and The Legend of Vox Machina and upcoming titles #1 Happy Family USA, from A24 and Ramy Youssef, and Batman: Caped Crusader (which was formerly at Max).
Medrano executive produces Hazbin Hotel and directed all episodes. Joel Kuwahara and Dana Tafoya-Cameron also executive produce; Scott Greenberg is an EP on season one.
