Maya Law broaches a vastly personal topic on intimate new song ‘Mother Tongue’.
The Norwich vocalist fuses jazz and soul with a sense of the classic, and she’s attracting attention across the country. Recently supporting Pip Millett and Clash favourites Children Of Zeus, her debut EP ‘Hitchhiking’ landed back in 2021.
Recently signing to TLD Records, Maya Law digs deep for her latest single. Dulcet of vocal and ambitious in its reach, ‘Mother Tongue’ is the perspective of someone with dual heritage, and it asks how we are able to define ourselves.
Born out of a self-described “identity crisis” it opens a new phase in her work, one that blends aesthetic confidence with a refreshing openness.
Looking back on the song’s genesis, she explains:
I wrote ‘Mother Tongue’ in the winter lockdown when I had too much time to think and had an identity crisis. I’ve always shied away from talking about my heritage as it’s just been easier to avoid the question. I think it’s quite common for people of mixed race to feel conflicted about their identity, especially when one side of you is in a country you have nothing to do with anymore.
‘Mother Tongue’ is an ode to the parts of myself that I’ve inherited from my mum, whether they have positive or negative connotations. I’ve still got lots of learning to do until I feel totally comfortable with my identity, and this is just part of the process.
Tune in now.
